Friends of Počitelj is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Počitelj’s unique cultural and historic heritage. By empowering residents and engaging with the local community, we aim to create a sustainable and vibrant future for Počitelj. We believe that Počitelj can serve as a model for neglected towns worldwide and strive to forge strong relationships with other underserved communities.

Vision for a Sustainable Future

Many neglected towns face significant challenges such as political neglect, lack of basic municipal services, and decaying infrastructure. We believe that Počitelj is not only a gem in the Bosnian and Herzegovinian landscape but also a valuable cultural heritage site for the global community.

As such, we are committed to working towards its preservation and development in a way that reflects its significance as a world heritage site. Our efforts are not limited to the local community, but we aim to engage with individuals and organizations from around the world who share our vision of preserving and celebrating Počitelj’s unique cultural heritage.

In 1996, Počitelj was named by World Monuments Watch as one of the world’s 100 most endangered cultural heritage sites, as proposed by the University of York, United Kingdom, and the University of Sarajevo, in the light of its outstanding value.

Legacy for Future Generations

Our mission at Friends of Počitelj goes beyond simply raising awareness about the tourist value of the settlement. We also recognize the importance of preserving its cultural and historic legacy for future generations. To this end, we try to work closely with local stakeholders, including government officials, residents, and business owners, to promote sustainable development practices and preserve the integrity of Počitelj’s historic buildings and sites which sadly don’t receive support needed mostly due to budget, bureaucratic red tape and lack of accountability.

Empowering Local Communities

At Friends of Počitelj, we strongly encourage sustainable local entrepreneurship as a means of self-sustainability for the local community. By supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs, we can help to foster economic growth and
create opportunities for local residents. We also believe that community involvement and participation are essential to ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of Počitelj. we aim to solve issues and form a local community
council, where the voices and concerns of the residents are heard and addressed.
